It’s no secret the Sierra foothills are home to hundreds of wineries and vineyards. In fact, at roughly 2.6 million acres, it’s one of the largest American Viticulture Areas in the country, and includes the counties of Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, Tuolumne and Yuba. What this means for you, of course, is you have almost endless choices for a day-trip (or a weekend getaway). Wherever the road takes you, you’ll find friendly winemakers happy to discuss their craft, as well as open tasting rooms (many with stunning views), often run by the winemaker’s spouse or grown children. This time of year—mid-August through October—you can also watch harvest crews busy in the vineyards, which are awash in gorgeous fall colors.

Beautiful vineyards at Boeger Winery
The Boeger Winery estate in Placerville, Calif., where these photos were shot, was founded by the Fossati-Lombardo family, who began producing zinfandel shortly after the Gold Rush. Several of the 160-year-old Mission grapevines still produce fruit today. Greg and Sue Boeger bought the vineyard in 1972 and Boeger Winery became the first post-Prohibition winery in the El Dorado AVA.

Barbera Vineyards
Greg Boeger began experimenting with varietals (the winery produces 30), but considers his “golden child” to be barbera, a wine the Sierra Nevada Foothills is now universally famous for.

“It’s low maintenance and easy to clean, both outside and inside. This is really important for a vacation home, where you don’t want to spend all your time cleaning. Simple surfaces and rooms help.”
